This will probably be the last bear image I post a This will probably be the last bear image I post as my short time with it didn't allow that many different compositions but I'm still thrilled with what I came away with. As I was leaving for home, I took a road parallel to the bear and looked over at this iconic Iowa view...except it had a bear in it! What if we got to a place where this was a normal view in Iowa, as if it were deer or turkeys out in the field? I think that would be pretty awesome! Last I heard the bear swam the Mississippi and is now on the Illinois side. Another image of the black bear in Eastern Iowa fr Another image of the black bear in Eastern Iowa from Tuesday. Many people have pushed back in comments & private messages regarding my presence near the bear. First off - I am a wildlife photographer. I photograph wild animals. Of course then when a rarer animal is reported I'm going to do my best to safely document its presence in our state via photography. I use a 600mm super telephoto lens that allows me to zoom in from far away on my subjects - it's not like I'm out there trying to take selfies with an iPhone. Secondly, I have partnered with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources on past occasions & did so in this instance in order to photograph this somewhat rare event so that the images could be shared for others to see. This bear was a few miles from Davenport (Iowa's 3rd most populated city) & was crossing highways at 5pm (rush hour). It's inevitable that passerby's were going to stop out of curiosity. At no point did the bear seem stressed. When observing wildlife, there are telltale signs of stress - most animals appear more upright & at "attention" instead of hunched down & relaxed. This bear didn't seem to care one bit about the people. To the people who are outraged about the spectators near the bear - I hear you. To the people who were excited about such a rare event for Iowa & wanted to see the bear - I hear you too. But the one thing that saddens me about all of this is how such a cool moment for Iowa can yet again be turned into another divisive opportunity. I love photography as it brings me joy & if I can spread joy to others through my work then I will continue to do so! Why can't we just sit back & appreciate this beautiful wild animal who decided to drop by our state? Black bears were once native to Iowa. I think we all need to learn how to coexist again - not just with animals but with each other too. Sometimes I'm accused of "photoshopping" my photos Sometimes I'm accused of "photoshopping" my photos. And you know what? I guess they're right. Here is a perfect example of me using Photoshop. I had this awesome encounter with a vixen about a week ago as she came over the hill and was nicely backlit on the ridge. However, a locator flag from the yard ran smack dab through her face! I was devastated but I kept shooting anyway in hopes that it could be removed in post-processing. Thank goodness for modern day technology and the ability to salvage this image. I only use Photoshop to remove distractions from images - not adding things that weren't there.
