Um, wow. BEST OF SHOW. Words I never expected to b

Um, wow. BEST OF SHOW. Words I never expected to be associated with, especially as a landscape and wildlife photographer because all the years I've been entering the @iowastatefair Photography Salon the genre that wins is always something else. Which made the moment I found out even more astonishing. I wasn't even paying attention to the cover of the book because that's not where I look for my images. I usually head straight to the corner where the landscape and wildlife awards are displayed. I think I about fell backwards down the stairs!

It's been hard to get out and create lately but for good reason -- being a husband and a dad takes so much time but it's also so rewarding! I wouldn't trade those moments for anything. Hoping someday when the kiddos are older we can go on adventures together and hopefully photography is something I can pass along to them.

I really enjoy the photography community. Working from home, I don’t get out much nor do I meet new people. But finding this group of people to learn from and be inspired by has been fantastic. So thanks to you guys and all those who have contributed to my photography knowledge in one way or another. And a special thank you goes out to my wife who holds the fort down and allows me to be gone hours on end (and sometimes all hours of the night). Although my kids may not remember this moment, I hope you grow up and see that if you put your mind to something and work hard that anything can happen. 2,297 adult division photos entered. Truly humbled and honored to have been selected as Best of Show, especially given all of the talented photographers who submit to this show. Congratulations to all of the other winners.

Well ya sure don't see that very often!! Thanks to a tip I was able to capture this wild scene... apparently this coyote has taken a liking to this hay bale and enjoys lazy mornings laying on top of it! I think I've only ever photographed a coyote 1 other time as they are typically skittish and way out in fields but I used my truck as a "blind" and was able to enjoy this moment without spooking it. What a fun memory!!

My son and I had a four owl day! 1 adult great horned owl, 1 adult barred owl but the grand prize was relocating 2 barred owlets in our neighborhood that seem to have found a new nest site this year! I had given up on seeing them as I wasn't noticing any activity in the nest from last year. Heard the begging hisses while searching in the woods today and it led us right to them! 😍

Twice in the last 30 days in Iowa?! I could get used to this! Good thing we're heading towards solar maximum so it could very well mean more outings like this for Iowa and other southern states 🙂

This was taken NE of Ankeny last night at 11:16pm. I took Jameson with me as he's seen my other images of the northern lights and always says how he wants to see them and go on a "boys trip" to do "something fun". Well, good thing the lights showed up as they did not disappoint so hopefully he's hooked like his daddy 🙂
