Sigh....wasn't a bobcat den in the giant root system of this tree like I was hoping. These guys apparently live in the basement (root system) and the penthouse (cavity in the top of tree). Guess it's too much to ask to have a bobcat/owl duplex! 😂

Ever since seeing this guy earlier in the week whe

Ever since seeing this guy earlier in the week when leaving my house (and of course couldn't photograph him again because I was in a hurry) I was determined the rest of the week to get some shots. Thanks to my daughter waking up at 6 today I was finally able to spend some time with the local barred owl! You can see the remains of the grab of what appeared to be a successful hunt still being clutched in its right talon (it flew right in front of me in the ditch and snatched presumably a mouse).

I have no shame in admitting that I was really ins

I have no shame in admitting that I was really inspired by another photographer who beautifully executed this shot last week. It's been probably 2 years now since I've done astrophotography and with the added inspiration of dropping off my 4 photo entries for the Iowa State Fair over the weekend, I mustered up enough energy at the end of the day of being a parent to go out and give up sleep for photography 😂 It felt good to get out again and spend some time under the stars. Even had a few barred owls serenading me 🙂

This guy continues to elude me one block from my house. What's worse is I didn't have my big lens with me and didn't want to risk getting it so I had to use my 70-200 with extender while he was on this beauuuutiful perch. He hunts the road right behind my house and I've only ever seen him a handful of times in the 3ish years I've lived here. He won't use my owl box and I can't find the nest (there is a pair because they vocalize from time to time). The search continues...until next time Mr Barred! 🙂

Fawns are born odorless to protect them from predators so they are safe just as they are hiding away in the tall grass.

Three great horned owlets put on quite the airshow today, flying laps around the grove I stood in as mom and dad kept a close eye. Crazy to think these were born about 6 weeks ago and now they are already practicing their flying!

This was my "lemonade" shot after waiting out the snowy owl and it never moved over a mile out while perched on the fencepost. I went to leave and this short-eared owl leapt out of the ditch and spun around right in front of my truck. He was probably posing for me all that time and wondered no one was taking his picture! Thanks to a birding friend, I was able to (complete) 2 birds with 1 (photo) today. I've looked in the windows of countless barns and corn cribs while driving and never have I ever seen an owl perched in the window. I mean we all know I love barns and for an owl to be included that's just a double whammy! And secondly, not only was this any owl, it was a rarer subspecies called the Subarctic Great Horned Owl that I've never seen before. It is much lighter in color - hardly any brown on it like the ones commonly found around here. Pretty awesome that owls are flying down to Iowa from Canada and beyond!
